Why you want copper

Smelting copper to liquid

- An Advanced Filter set to allow copper feeds ore onto the top of a Smelter.
- An adjacent Thermal Buffer holds the heat; burning Cinder feeds a Lava pool as the heat source.
- The smelter melts the copper into liquid copper, which you collect.
The settling table lists Copper (liquid) → Copper, meaning liquid copper lands directly on nearby solid copper — handy when you're catching smelter output. Three pitfalls are worth knowing before you build:
- A Cinder layer that's too thin makes the Lava pool disappear, so keep the fuel coming.
- If you forget to press Ctrl to change a Filter's rule, it stays on the default "allow seed" and your copper sits in the line.

Building the Steam Turbine power loop
The classic setup uses a five-step loop to turn heat into stored energy:
- Cinder burns to create a Lava heat source.
- Water and Snow near the heat turn into Steam.
- Steam feeds a Steam Turbine.
- Energy exits through an Energy Connector.
- The connector charges the filled copper Mold battery.
The turbine's vertical structure, from the bottom up, is a Lava layer, a water layer, a Condenser, and a Snow layer on top. The Turbine captures the rising steam, and the Energy Connector hands the resulting energy to a filled copper Mold. Where the loop stalls
The turbine is picky about two things, and both are common first failures:
- It only generates power when connected to a filled Mold. Hooking it to an empty mold produces nothing, so charge a mold before you rely on the output.
- Snow runs out, and generation stops with it. Snow supply is the real bottleneck for sustained power, not the heat. A Snow Maker that converts water to snow can automate this, though the unlock requirements aren't detailed in official sources (verify in current build).
Because copper and gold are both high-density materials, they sit in the heaviest band of the material settling order. When sorting mixed outputs, process the dense materials first so they don't clog your lighter streams.
Scaling copper into the late game
Copper is spread widely across the map, but Early Access currently gives it a fairly narrow job. Community players have noted the map holds far more copper than early uses demand, and that range is expected to widen with updates.
